Because they were able to live in fresh water they were introduced as a fish for recreation into reservoirs and also put there to control the Gizzard Shad herring which does not have much value.

Butchart Gardens Beauty And The Beasts

If you want to feel like Alice in Wonderland but leave the oddity out of it, visit the Butchart gardens in Brentwood Bay, BC. A beautiful reclamation of an old Portland cement quarry has captured the interest of visitors from around the world. While the flora is undoubtedly striking, the fauna brings life this abundance of nature.
As a tribute to all the animals and children who visit the grounds, Tacca, the boar, sits on his haunches, near the exit gate. Tradition is to rub his nose before leaving this paradise. The shine left on his snout suggests that most all take part of this practice.
The original boar was a marble statue from the Hellenistic civilization. This sculpture was copied, again in marble, and now resides in the Uffizi Museum in Florence, Italy. The first bronze cast, Il Porcellino, was done in 1612 by Pietro Tacca, this bronze also is in Florence at the Museo Stefano Bardini. The one that resides at the property’s exit was made in 1620.
The snout rubbing has a long history too. Il Porcellino originally was part of a large fountain in Florence. Visitors would place a coin in the mouth of the boar. Luck was granted when the coin fell from the mouth into the fountain grate below. The rubbing of the snout was to assure a return to Florence.
In front of the residence, stand a donkey and a foal. These two share their creator with the three Sturgeons in the fountain at the Japanese garden. Sirio Tofanari is the name of this wonderful artist. He is known and revered for his dedication to creating exquisite sculptures of animals. Like Tacca, the Sturgeons are a replica of one found in an Italian fountain.
From their world travels, Robert and Jennie Butchart collected various birds, which decorate the grounds. Peacocks roam the lawn, a parrot sits at home, and the ducks swim in the quiet Star Pond. The Begonia Bower houses the Circle of Doves. This was a loving anniversary gift from Ann-Lee Ross to her husband, Robert Ian. Robert is the grandson of the Butcharts.
While not a true sculpture, the Rose Carousel deserves mention. Thirty animals are in this amazing menagerie. All were hand carved by the masters of carousel art. Each is made of basswood and delight young and old alike.
Robin-Lee, the great granddaughter hand chose the animal designs for the carousel. She is now the keeper of this garden. Grand Canyon West Rim Meadview Visitor Center Has Shuttle Bus Service To Skywalk

A shuttle bus to the new glass bottomed Skywalk is available at the Grand Canyon West Rim Meadview visitor center. This provides an alternative way to see the West Rim for those who do not wish to take an organized tour.
Grand Canyon West is found in the territory of the Hualapi Indians, and is not enclosed in the main US National Park at the canyon. The area is about a 3 hour drive from Vegas, about 5 hours from the canyon’s South Rim in the National Park, and about 6 hours from Phoenix, Arizona.
There are numerous attractions for visitors to this part of the canyon. There are magnificent views from Eagle Point and Guano Point. It is possible to descend to the base of the canyon by helicopter, to take a horseback ride along the top of the canyon, or to enjoy a whitewater rafting experience on the Colorado River. There are also cowboy and Native American performances at the Hualapi ranch.
Nevertheless, for most visitors the biggest attraction is the glass bottomed Skywalk. This is at Eagle Point, and was opened on March 20, 2007. Buzz Aldrin, the astronaut, led the first group of walkers around the U-shaped structure.
The Skywalk, which extends for about 70 feet from the edge of the canyon, is 2000 feet above the canyon floor. Designed by Las Vegas firm, Lochsa Engineering, it can support a load equivalent to 12 fully loaded 747s, and will withstand wind speeds in excess of 100 mph. Only 120 people are allowed out on the Skywalk at any time. There may therefore be some queues, and advance reservations may be made to reduce waiting times.
The last section of road up to the edge of the canyon is not paved, and individual visitors are not allowed to take their own vehicles. There are 2 main ways to get to the West rim.
One way is to take an organized tour. There are many tour operators offering half and one day trips with complimentary pickup and drop-off from hotels in Las Vegas. These trips can be either by road or by air. Air trips land at an airport in the Indian reservation. Trips by road may often include a visit to the Hoover Dam, which is en route. As an alternative, those who do not wish to take an organized tour, can take a shuttle bus from the Grand Canyon West Rim Meadview visitor center. This is in Meadview, AZ, a few miles outside the Indian reservation.
