The city of Cardiff is not just the capital city of Wales, but also the most popular tourist destination in the United Kingdom of Great Britain besides London, the English capital. Cardiff is also the largest city in Wales, however it was only only a small town until the time of the start of the nineteenth century. It was in the early 19C that the town of Cardiff saw itself develop into a busy seaport involved in the transportation of coal mined in Wales, together with other industries. The town of Cardiff received city status, from King Edward VII, on 28th October 1905, but, weirdly, Cardiff only became the capital city of Wales on 20th December 1955.

Peak District Areas: A Guide to the City of Derby

Derby is a beautiful and bustling city which can be found on the River Derwent valley. Attractive surrounding countryside can be found just outside the city and Derby is known for it’s fine architecture, stunning cathedral and a great range of shopping stores. Derby is also a popular base for visitors to nearby Peak District National Park.
The city is compact with a great layout and fine historical streets and gorgeous shopping arcades. ‘Westfield’ is a large popular shopping centre and home to many high street stores. The Cathedral Quarter is a charming shopping area of Derby where you can find arts and crafts to boutique and independent stores. A great place to window shop or browse! There is also a farmer’s market which takes place every month and certainly draws the crowds.

Derby has an interesting history which definitely shows in it’s architecture. The valley follows the Derwent River to the Matlock village in the Peak District and on the way there are some good points of interest. Derby is one of only five cities in the UK to have a UNESCO World Heritage Site – the Derwent Valley Mills. The Derwent Valley Mills are culturally and historically important because the textile mills show clearly how developments in technology where made in the 18th century.
Derby has been settled for just over 2000 years and past residents include Romans, Saxons and Vikings. The industrial revolution also played a great part in the growth of the city which went on to become the first city to develop an eater-powered silk mill in 1717.

For a long time many cities across the United Kingdom of Great Britain have revitalised themselves and none more so than the incredibly vibrant city of Liverpool in England’s north western region. At one time the British Empire’s second city, Liverpool found itself in sharp decline during the years after the Second World War. During the 1980′s the unemployment rate became unbearably high and the city faced many problems. While other cities benefited from massive inward investment the city of Liverpool floundered. However, in the last decade this has drastically changed and nowadays the city a thrilling, cosmopolitan and forward looking place to visit. In the article which follows I briefly examine a selection of factors which make this city such a worthy vacation destination.

In 2008 the city of Liverpool became the European Capital of Culture and an amazing list of cultural events took place through the full year they held the title. These events, and accompanying press coverage, brought the city to the attention of many new visitors who might not have previously thought-about a vacation in Liverpool and ever since then tourism has remained high.
