Reliving The Nostalgia Of Old Las Vegas

The City of Las Vegas has a long and complex history but its real notoriety was achieved in the period between 1930 and 1980. The construction of the Hoover Dam in the 1930s brought the first showgirl clubs and casinos to the region in an effort to entertain the mostly male population of workers at the dam site.
After World War II, the city saw significant growth as crime lords took interest in the money to be had in organized gambling casinos in the region. The number of Las Vegas hotels, restaurants, show clubs and casinos boomed from the mid-1940s through the mid-1960s. When most people think of the classic Las Vegas, this is the period that comes to mind. The 1940s, 50s and 60s were the heyday for Las Vegas, with the Rat Pack frequently appearing in the Copa Room and other locations. The city was the pinnacle of cool.
Las Vegas saw unprecedented growth from the late 1960s through the 1980s and this period is also of significant nostalgic value for many. It was the era of the big Broadway shows and lounge singers. Performers like Liberace, Elvis, Wayne Newton, Bobby Darrin and others frequented the stages of various locations in Vegas.
For those who are interested in Las Vegas history, there are certain areas of the city that are particular merit. You can see some of the oldest buildings, historic hotels and casinos in the Fremont Street area. The Golden Gate Hotel is the oldest standing hotel in the city and located in downtown Las Vegas near the Fremont Street Experience. It was built in 1906 and continues to be a destination spot for history buffs.
Some of the oldest Las Vegas hotels after The Golden Gate are the Golden Nugget and Binion’s. Rat Pack-era hotels still in operation in Vegas include the Sahara, Tropicana, Flamingo and Riviera. All of these older hotels still have rooms available and those who want to experience the feeling of the old Las Vegas will enjoy the accommodations.
The Neon Museum on Fremont Street is a big draw for those who wish to see the old Las Vegas. The outdoor museum features neon signs from throughout Vegas history including those that were frequently seen in old movies and television shows. Slowly, the signs are being restored and added to Fremont Street for public display.

If you’re interested in classic Vegas entertainment, there is a number of options available to you. Tribute shows frequent the stages in Vegas. These include The Rat Pack is Back, Legends in Concert, and Human Nature – The Ultimate Celebration of Motown Sound presented by Smokey Robinson.
The Supremes first appeared in Vegas in 1966 on the stage at the Flamingo. Many of the big Motown names continue to perform in Vegas today. Gladys Knight, The Temptations and Smokey Robinson are all contemporary Vegas weekend headliners.
For those who want a traditional Vegas dining experience, there are a number of old-style Vegas lounges from which to choose. Lawry’s, Mr. Lucky’s at the Hard Rock Hotel, Peppermill, and the Circus Circus Steak House are a few to check out. Vic & Anthony’s Steakhouse at the Golden Nugget is another classic spot located inside one of the older casinos. And for those who don’t mind traveling off The Strip, the Golden Steer Steak House is a good choice. This place has seen a number of celebrities, including Elvis Presley and the Rat Pack.
Las Vegas also has its share of museums and historic monuments. If you’re there to take in some Vegas cultural history in addition to a bit of gambling, you may want to stop by the Liberace Museum or the Las Vegas Hilton to see the Elvis statue dedicated to the legendary King.
For traditional history buffs, there are several museums of merit in Las Vegas. In the 1950s, there were nuclear tests held just an hour outside of Las Vegas and the Atomic Testing Museum in the city includes 10,000 square feet of displays, interactive events and short films capturing the controversial history of this era.
The Mob Experience at the Tropicana is another must-see for those interested in Las Vegas history. This museum opens in late 2010 and will include authentic photos, videos and artifacts of the organized crime lords who once ran Las Vegas.

3) Daytona Beach – Looking for some fun, waves, sun, beach in more of a party atmosphere? You can find that in Daytona. Located on the east coast of Florida this has been a popular beach destination for families for many years. There is 23 miles of beach to enjoy along the Atlantic ocean.
4) Miami beach – This has been a popular destination for families for many years. People from all over the United States and the world visit Miami for the sun, sand, fun and beaches. Portugal has been competing with Spain for many years to draw in holiday golfers. Its combination of excellent courses, great infrastructure (hotels, resorts, restaurants, etc) and inviting weather conditions has elevated the county to being a highly desirable destination.
The country’s main regions are Estoril (around the capital of Lisbon), the Oeste region, the Algarve and Madeira. Each provides a good mix of golfing/touristic options that will suit any golfing itinerary.

Discover Ireland – Ballybunion Hotels And Amenities Guide

Ballybunion is a charming seaside resort town in the south west of Ireland which has been drawing in tourists to its sandy beaches and to its golf clubs for many decades.
A key factor in the village’s popularity is that it is one of the few towns in the area not to have been over-commercialized with coffee shops and trendy bars. Instead it has retained a small traditional Irish town feel to it that foreign and Irish visitors still wish to experience.
The brunt of tourism to the area is drawn to the family-friendly beach and secondly to the local golf courses.
In summer, Ballybunion beach becomes the focal point for most visitors. Some come to relax on the beach, swim in the clean sea water or even join in with some of the surfing (the local surf school also rent out equipment).
When the beach is crowded in summer, many visitors partake of the enjoyable cliff walk to take in the sea views and also visit some of the other beaches in the area. The ‘Nuns’ beach, with its overlooking nunnery, is a particularly nice spot for whiling away a relaxing summers day.
For holidaying golfers, a round or two at Ballybunion golf club should not be missed. The 2 courses are world famous with the Old Course regularly appearing in the top 50 lists of courses in the world. Certainly, it is in the top 3 of links style courses world-wide. The second ‘Cashen’ course is less famous, but equally enjoyable to play. The one big tip though is to book a tee-time well in advance.
Possibly the most famous visitor to Ballybunion has been former president, and golf enthusiast, Bill Clinton who played a round of golf here in 1998. The town was so proud of this fact that a statue now appears in the town main street of Mr. Clinton teeing off.
The only downside to the village’s old style charm is that there are not many Ballybunion hotels and those that are would largely be considered as guesthouses. Therefore, most visitors choose to base themselves in hotels in the surrounding countryside and make day trips in to Ballybunion. Given that this area of County Kerry has some of the most beautiful countryside in Ireland it won’t be such a bad thing to be based outside the village.
Ballybunion town has a small tourist office on its main street providing details of local amenities, information and attractions, such as details of the local bus service to Listowel town. Note however that the tourist office is only open in the summer season.

The south course in Quinta do Lago is the more mature of the two courses available to play at this resort. Some holes prove challenging due to the stark Atlantic Ocean breeze, while other holes are sheltered by lush vegetation and forestry. Given the courses maturity, the greens play exceptionally true and fast as one would expect.
The Oitavos Golf Club is a well architected course that makes the most of the surrounding countryside. It has played host to the Open and as a result the front nine and back nine holes require long tee shots and accurate second shots in order to avoid the bunkers that are dotted around most greens.
No trip to the Algarve would be complete without playing the Vale da Pinta. This is an interestingly designed course that is embedded within a natural valley. The fairways undulations make for some odd bounces which some would deem unfair but this does aid golfers playing short off the tee.
Given the range of courses in Portugal, and the proliferation of clubs in the Algarve, a top 5 list of courses will always be quite subjective. Hopefully this list gives you food for thought about your next golf break.
