Beach Vacations: San Elijo Beach Camping In San Diego

San Elijo Campground in North County San Diego is the perfect spot for families or travelers visiting San Diego who are on a budget or want to sleep in the ocean air.
The campground has a store, surfboard rentals and a surf school, it also has a taco shop. Additionally, the quaint beach town Cardiff-by-the-Sea is just a crosswalk away from the campground. Traveling with your dog? There is a bar right outside the campground called The Office, which allows pets.
The San Elijo State Beach Campground, which is partially set on a cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean, is great place for any traveler looking to swim, sunbath or take long walks on the beach. One negative to the campground is its location to the railroad tracks. The commuter train runs regularly until 1 a.m. through Cardiff and past the campground, and due to an intersection, the train has to blow its horn. One way to muffle the sound is to try to camp closer to the ocean.
Camping at San Elijo State Beach is an affordable way to travel to San Diego on a budget. Here is the price list: $35/inland site; $50/ocean site; $20 a day for electricity (not all sites have hookups); $12 a day for an additional car (yes a trailer is a car), showers $1 for 3 minutes. The campground fills up during summer, spring break and holidays, so reservations are required. Winter months are slower and the campground rarely fills up.
If you reserve your site online and want an inland spot, I recommend getting on in the middle as opposed to a spot against the fence. The back sites are closer to the highway and train tracks, so being in the middle helps to buffer the sound while giving you a more authentic camping experience.
Of the San Diego State Beach campgrounds, I believe San Elijo is the most social. There seems to be more kids and younger families as well as more people just hanging out by the barbecue.

The 3rd most important industry in San Diego is tourism, and it’s no wonder. Southern California enjoys beautiful weather conditions at all times of year, but particularly May – August when tourists are on the move. Things that you can do in any city are more enjoyable when the weather’s nice. The only thing you could add to make a better getaway place is an ocean. You can find theme parks and museums in many major metropolitan areas. Those in San Diego, though, are unique. Here are a few of San Diego’s leading attractions.
The San Diego Zoo is famous worldwide, and its sister, the Wild Animal Park, is equally amazing. Balboa Park, near downtown San Diego, is home to the 4,000 animals at the San Diego Zoo. The Wild Animal Park in Escondido houses another 3,500 animals on 1,800 acres. Both parks offer a variety of educational programs and summer camps for kids in addition to the beautiful exhibits available for tourists to see.
