South Uist Vacations And Some Handy Info
The Island known as South Uist is situated in the group of islands known as the Western Isles (and alsi the Outer Hebrides) of Scotland. The islands which are inhabited are Lewis, North Uist, Isle of Harris, South Uist, Benbecula, Barra and Eriskay plus numerous other islands which are inhabited only by sheep and wildlife. below I introduce the Isle of South Uist and explain why the island is such a great place in which to take a vacation, plus I introduce some hotels on South Uist.
The Outer Hebrides are unique, they have totally unique types of flora and fauna in a spectacular countryside with some of the most dramatic coastline in the United Kingdom of Great Britain. The culture of the Hebrides is a fascinating blend of Norse, Celtic and Gaelic influences, which could also be said to be unique.
On the island of South Uist, especially in the western parts, you will discover the most beautiful beaches of sand and behind these vast areas of machair. Machair is unique to this part of the world, it is a type of immensely fertile, low-lying meadow which features masses of wildflowers in spring and summer. Many folk believe that the beaches of South Uist are the most beuatiful in the country, the United Kingdom of Great Britain, and even Europe.
The island of South Uist is also an excellent place to indulge in a round of golf. Askernish Golf Course is the oldest Outer Hebrides course and it was designed by Old Tom Morris (the designer of the Old Course at St. Andrews) and numerous others in Scotland. Sadly the course was damaged and it desperately needs restoring before it can be played on again however you will find many other golf courses across the islands.
Obviously South Uist offers masses of opportunities to indulge in a vast array of sports. Surfing and other water sports are incredibly popular and virtually everybody can enjoy a little rambling. Besides golf the most popular sport is still fishing though more and more cyclists appear year upon year.
Even though South Uist doesn’t feature a broad choice of galleries and museums it has enough to keep you entertained if it happens to rain. Places like Kildonan Museum focus on the islands history and its association with Flora MacDonald and Prince Charles Edward Stuart.
