An Introduction To The Tourist Places In Syracuse
Syracuse is one of the oldest consistently occupied places in the whole Italy. Archaeologists place the first settling in Syracuse at about 800 BC which makes Syracuse nearly three thousand years old. Today, Syracuse is a small town with a population of only around 120,000.
However, the prosperous history of Syracuse is evident in many of the historical sightseeing opportunities that are to be found around the city. Below we’ve mentioned just a few interesting things to do in Syracuse.
The Cathedral in Syracuse is probably among the oldest in Italy as the original structure upon which it is erected used to be a Greek temple dating back to the 5th century BC. The Cathedral is open for the public to view and is probably a good place to start a sightseeing tour of Syracuse because it is quite centrally located.
Archaeological artefacts from Syracuse and other centres of art can be seen in the Paulo Orsi Archaeological Museum that boasts of having a wide-ranging collection of exceptional Roman and Greek artefacts in the entire county. This museum is open to public for an entry fee of 4.50 Euros.
The Syracuse Neapolis Archaeological Park is a great excavation place that depicts the nature of life in Syracuse in the early Roman period.
You can roam about the site at your will if you pay an entry pass fee of 4.50 Euro. The major landmark of this site is the Greek theatre that dates back to the 5th century BC.
There is also a Roman amphitheatre which is around 2000 years old, and would have been used for gladiatorial battles.
As the name would indicate, this museum is dedicated to showcasing art from the medieval era right up to modern day contemporary art.
There are various works of art in sculpture and painting that can be found in this museum in Syracuse although there is an emphasis laid on local art.
Cycling across Italy is a wonderful way to enjoy the charm of rural Italy. For more detailed guidance on things to do in Syracuse please click on the preceding links.
St Croix, The US Virgin Islands
Saint Croix is the largest of the US Virgin Islands, which lie 1730 miles east south east of Miami and 93 miles west of Puerto Rico. This sector of the Virgin Islands has belonged to the United States since 1917 when they were acquired from the Danish government for $25m in gold to protect American shores from German U-boat attack.
At the time, it was feared that Germany would subjugate the islands and construct submarine pens there in order to harass American supply shipping, which was essential to the allies in Europe during the First World War.
The US Virgin islands is a group of about 60 chiefly uninhabited islands, the four biggest of which are called St. Croix, St. Thomas, St. John and Water Island. (By the way, ‘Saint’ is pronounced in the English manner). The Islands’ inhabitants, however, have other names for these four which are Twin City, Rock City, Love City and Small City respectively.
Christopher Columbus landed there on November 14th, 1493, but there is evidence of human habitation on the island going back to 5000 BC. In fact, the Arawaks and the Caribs made up the islands’ population, before the Europeans got there.
Possession of St Croix and the other Virgin Islands changed a lot over the following centuries, but it became infamous to many people as Santa Cruz, which is its Spanish name. As Santa Cruz, St Croix featured prominently in 17th and 18th century stories of pirates and buccaneers on the Spanish Main.
In fact, after Spain first took control of the island, it changed hands seven times; having been Spanish, British, French, Maltese, Dutch, Danish and now American. The residents of the US Virgin Islands are now US citizens and carry US passports. They also use the US dollar and US laws.
St Croix was an agricultural powerhouse in the Caribbean until the 1960′s when the local government decided it was time to industrialize. The island is now home to HOVENSA, one of the largest oil refineries in the world.
There is also a sizeable distillery, the Cruzan Rum Distillery, which used to make rum from sugar cane grown on the island. Sugar cane, or its extract, molasses are now imported from the Dominican Republic to make Southern Comfort and Cruzan Rum. Diageo is arranging to build a distillery there too in order to produce Captain Morgan Rum.
Residents of the island call themselves Crucians. However, there is a lot of debate about what constitutes a ‘real Crucian’. Many say that a Crucian is someone who was born and raised on St Croix, while others claim that descendants of the slaves that the Danes took over in 16th and 17th Centuries are the only true Crucians.
Many Crucians can track their ancestry back to Puerto Rico or other Virgin islands as the sugar cane industry attracted a lot of migrant workers in the 1930′s, 40′s and 50′s. There was also an influx of down-islanders (ie from other Caribbean islands), as the locals say, after the industrialization of St Croix in the US Virgin Islands in the 1960′s and 1970′s as tourism and petrol became more central to the economy.
Owen Jones, the author of this piece, writes on many topics, but is currently involved with St Croix Virgin Islands. If you are interested in St Croix Vacation Rentals in the US Virgin Islands, please click through to our site.

The many historic buildings found around Cleveland Bay are a reminder of this heritage. It is still a major port for the beef and mining industries. A shameful claim to fame is that the same Robert Towns began the practice of black birding kidnapping Kanakas (South Sea Islanders) from their homeland and bringing them to Australia for cheap labor as European were considered inherently unsuited to work in the tropics .The Kanakas were primarily used in the Sugar Industry and were paid a pittance, housed in substandard accommodation and were given the most physically demanding jobs. The kidnapping was outlawed in 1868 and government ships were placed on all Kanakas ships to check that their emigration was voluntary but only in 1901 was the use of island labor completely stopped.
Magnetic Island , 8km offshore, named by Captain Cook has 2,500 inhabitants and is the only reef island with a permanent population. What to See in Prague
Prague has become one of the most popular places to visit in Europe. The combination of great sights and low prices makes it a very great place for a vacation. You can find cheap hotels, cheap gourmet food and large beers.
The first historical building in Prague was the castle Prazsky Hrad. It was built in the 9th century. The castle sits on a hill high above the Vltava River.
A monastery, three churches and a palace is located behind the castle walls. In 1320 the city Hradcany was founded in one part of the castle’s outer courtyard.
The president seat has been located in the castle since 1918. There is changing of the Guard every hour in front of the castle. At noon it even includes fanfare.
The old part of Prague is called Stare Mesto. Centrally located in the area is Staromestske namesti (in English Old Town Square). A lot of historical buildings surround the square; a sight that can be compared with almost any other European city.
The first settlements started in the 10th century around the castle. From here it spread to the other side of the Vltava River. The main building point was around the square in the old town.
The Old Town Hall was built in 1338 and in 1490 the unusual astronomical clock was added. Today large groups crowd to watch the show with odd performers like a rooster, a turkey, apostles, the Death, the Greed and the Vanity.
The famous Charles Bridge is 520 meters long and built of sandstone blocks, which is said to be reinforced with a mixture of mortar and eggs. The bridge was built in 1357 and until 1741 was Charles Bridge is the only way to cross the Vltava.
Until 1683 the bridge was only decorated with a simple cross. Then the first statues were set up, and since a lot of other statues have followed; statues that gives the bridge its characteristic look.
The bridge is a popular place for tourists; and for artists and merchants who offer the wares to the tourists.
Even though Prague is more expensive than it used to be, it is still a great place for shopping. And it is not just wares from former East European countries that are for sale.
Since the Velvet Revolution in 1989 a lot has happened in Prague; both in terms of foreign and Czech products. Today all major American and Western European brands are represented in Prague. And you can easily spend a full day shopping in department stores and specialty shops in downtown Prague.

Vacation In Pennsylvania – Learn Regional History While Participating In All It Has To Offer
One of the original 13 Colonies, Pennsylvania was home to the first Continental Congress in 1774 as well as the Constitutional Convention in 1787. Later that year Pennsylvania became the second state in the union. Steeped in history and culture – Pennsylvania is a wonderful vacation destination.
Pennsylvania’s founder (1682), William Penn, was a Quaker and an immigrant from England. Penn is the most well known of the Friends in the foundation of the Quakers in America. Having spent most of his life in England, he still managed to play a significant role in Colonial history.
The Amish country of Pennsylvania is centered in Lancaster County, little more than an hour’s drive from Philadelphia. Its gentle rolling hills and winding country roads are home to many Quakers and Mennonites, people who shun much of modern society and honor the past and their privacy. Treat yourself to an afternoon drive through the countryside and stop for a meal at an Amish restaurant. Watch out for the black horse-drawn buggies, they’re quite numerous.
Scattered amongst Pennsylvania’s natural environment are attractions related to the once-lucrative coal mining industry as well as a number of covered bridges, one of the state’s more revered attractions. Pittsburgh and its countryside is a great destination for a family getaway, a company convention, a reunion of old friends or any other group function.
One of America’s worst disasters occurred in Johnstown, a steel-making town about 80 miles east of Pittsburgh. On May 31, 1889, an earth dam 14 miles above the town broke, sending a towering wave through the center of the town with almost no warning. Many people were washed away, and others drowned in fires that started.
South Fork Dam, the dam that doomed Johnstown, is still as it was on that night in 1889. You can visit the dam and tour modern museum just above it. Then travel down to Johnstown itself and visit the official museum there. It will bring history and the horrors of the flood to life.
As the sixth most populous city in America, and one of the oldest, Philadelphia bristles with history and culture. The Liberty Bell and Independence Hall are the obvious first stops, but there is much more, including the Art Museum, Franklin Institute, and the Reading Terminal Market. The hoagies and cheesesteaks justly famous, but there’s so much more. Visit and enjoy some great dining.
The nation’s first transcontinental road, US Route 30, spans Pennsylvania. Known as the Lincoln Highway, begin your drive at Gettysburg and head west you’ll encounter living history all along the way. The road is interesting, the small towns it passes through are fascinating. But don’t leave Gettysburg until you have toured the battlefields and soaked in one of the most monumental events of the Civil War. You will leave a different person.
