When the weather turns sunny and the flowers start to bloom, people start thinking about picnics. Picnics are a great way to enjoy the warmer months and nature, with a minimum of expense and planning needed. If you have a cooler and a blanket, you’re set.

You can make watermelon easier to manage by cutting it into chunks before the picnic. If you want to do this, store the cut melon in a Tupperware container. You can also buy precut watermelon at many grocery stores.

Bread and cheese: To round out a picnic meal, include bread and cheese. This pairing is filling and tasty and goes great with fruit and potato salad. Pick a bread with some structure to it, like a baguette, and a firm and flavorful cheese. Cut the bread and cheese at home, and pack in your cooler. You’re all set!

Deviled eggs: People tend to love deviled eggs in a variety of settings. Still, this finger food is a great choice for picnics. They are small, tasty, and easy to make.

Deviled eggs also bring a variety of textures and flavors to a picnic meal. They have a creamy base, but also include crunchy elements. This is pleasing to many people. Plus they can be eaten in just a few bites.

Not looking for a long vacation overseas? Try a weekend in California. You’ll love the beaches there, and with so many of them, you have plenty of options. Those of you with children will appreciate not only the many activities available, but also the fact that you don’t have to travel overseas with kids in tow!

Some of the better known attractions in California include Sea World and the San Diego Zoo, but there are many others. Huntingdon is one of the best beaches in my opinion, and my family and I visit almost every year.

Before making a decision on your getaway destination, be sure you do your homework and find out if the resort is more appropriate for family vacations or romantic getaways. This can avoid some awkward discussions with the kids later!

Because there are usually many different things to do on your beach vacation, it is helpful to look into the many options before you set out. Decide what your top priorities are and have fun!

Safeco Field, Seattle: If you head out to Seattle to take in a Mariners game, be sure to check out the rest of the Pioneer Square area as well. This area is Seattle’s oldest neighborhood, and features some striking architecture and amazing outdoor spaces.

How often do you visit the attractions of your own city? For many of us, we may have actually visited fewer of them then the tourists do. Or perhaps you have seen everything, but a lot of time has passed since then.

Most attractions offer a pass that will allow you unlimited visits during a certain season, most often summer. This will pay for itself in about three visits, not even counting all the money you’ll save on food by being able to feed the kids lunch at home!

Saint Croix is the largest of the US Virgin Islands, which lie 1730 miles east south east of Miami and 93 miles west of Puerto Rico. This sector of the Virgin Islands has belonged to the United States since 1917 when they were acquired from the Danish government for $25m in gold to protect American shores from German U-boat attack.

At the time, it was feared that Germany would subjugate the islands and construct submarine pens there in order to harass American supply shipping, which was essential to the allies in Europe during the First World War.

The US Virgin islands is a group of about 60 chiefly uninhabited islands, the four biggest of which are called St. Croix, St. Thomas, St. John and Water Island. (By the way, ‘Saint’ is pronounced in the English manner). The Islands’ inhabitants, however, have other names for these four which are Twin City, Rock City, Love City and Small City respectively.

Christopher Columbus landed there on November 14th, 1493, but there is evidence of human habitation on the island going back to 5000 BC. In fact, the Arawaks and the Caribs made up the islands’ population, before the Europeans got there.

Possession of St Croix and the other Virgin Islands changed a lot over the following centuries, but it became infamous to many people as Santa Cruz, which is its Spanish name. As Santa Cruz, St Croix featured prominently in 17th and 18th century stories of pirates and buccaneers on the Spanish Main.

In fact, after Spain first took control of the island, it changed hands seven times; having been Spanish, British, French, Maltese, Dutch, Danish and now American. The residents of the US Virgin Islands are now US citizens and carry US passports. They also use the US dollar and US laws.

St Croix was an agricultural powerhouse in the Caribbean until the 1960’s when the local government decided it was time to industrialize. The island is now home to HOVENSA, one of the largest oil refineries in the world.

There is also a sizeable distillery, the Cruzan Rum Distillery, which used to make rum from sugar cane grown on the island. Sugar cane, or its extract, molasses are now imported from the Dominican Republic to make Southern Comfort and Cruzan Rum. Diageo is arranging to build a distillery there too in order to produce Captain Morgan Rum.

Residents of the island call themselves Crucians. However, there is a lot of debate about what constitutes a ‘real Crucian’. Many say that a Crucian is someone who was born and raised on St Croix, while others claim that descendants of the slaves that the Danes took over in 16th and 17th Centuries are the only true Crucians.

Many Crucians can track their ancestry back to Puerto Rico or other Virgin islands as the sugar cane industry attracted a lot of migrant workers in the 1930’s, 40’s and 50’s. There was also an influx of down-islanders (ie from other Caribbean islands), as the locals say, after the industrialization of St Croix in the US Virgin Islands in the 1960’s and 1970’s as tourism and petrol became more central to the economy.

There may be a lot of tourist destinations and activities in your city that you know droves of people come to see, but it must have been a while since you’ve experienced them yourself. Well, just because you’ve seen it all before, doesn’t mean that you can’t revisit them with your friends and family.

If you can, take a couple of days off during the summer and go see these places. Beat the crowd by going on weekend afternoons or weekday mornings.

The good thing about being a local is that you’re familiar enough with the tourist destinations to really get the most out of the experience.

Water parks are always popular among common folk. Since they do tend to fill up around noon, you may want to go when the park first opens. If you want to save money, you can have a quick bite to eat at home before heading out.

Going to the zoo, on the other hand, is definitely an all day event. To hold you off during the day, bring a picnic lunch. If the guards don’t allow you to bring in the food, simply get a hand stamp and have a feast in a comfortable place. Once you’re done, just show you’re stamp to get back into the zoo.

You may want to consider getting a season pass too. Most of the time, you get your money’s worth in three visits to the park. And on days that you don’t feel like staying in the park all day, break your trip into 2-3 hour chunks and just keep coming back.

To prepare in advance, you may want to pick up some free brochures at your local visitor’s center. There you might see trips and excursions that you may not have tried yet. The staff at the visitor’s center usually has free or discounted passes to give out, so that may be worth checking out as well.

Seeing all the sights of New York City will definitely be a fun and exciting experience for kids but it can also be very tiring. A nice way to end the day is a healthy meal coupled with a good night’s rest. This will get them ready for another fun day in the morning.
