An Outing With The Harley Davidson: Taking A Trip To Italy And Greece

You know, one time I had the feeling I needed a holiday and I needed it right now. Impulsive, I know, but that is who I am. Who knows, maybe you had that sometimes yourself. You just need a break and if you love to drive your motorbike (like me) then you just need to feel the wind in your face. So I got on my bike with my wife (we both drive a vintage Harley Davidson) and after I packed some stuff we got up and drove away.

Since I always wanted to visit Italy and Greece, I decided I would just head for the Italian border and further take it from there. Driving through Switzerland was a great experience and my ancient Harley never had a problem with the mountains. But then again, you can always count on a Harley Davidson. Anyone who owns one will tell you that. And so I reached the Italian border.

Italy was different than Switzerland though. When Italians get into a car, you better watch out. When you drive a bike you really have to watch out for the Italian drivers who seem to be on steroids as soon as they get into a car. When we drove to the south, from Milan (where we shortly visited the Duomo) to Rome, we had a ball with those Italian “race car drivers”. But when you drive a Harley in Italy, you definitely experience the admiration from the Italians because you drive such an awesome bike.

After driving through Rome for a little while (and visited some historic places), we decided to drive to Ancona and take the ferry to Greece. When we arrived in Greece we decided to head for Athens (a must see) but when we arrived there (and visited the Acropolis) we decided it was too humid and too hot to stay there too long. So we visited the harbor of Piraeus (which is really close) and took the ferry to the island of Crete (which we both wanted to see already for a long time). When we arrived there, we drove through the countryside and visited historic cities like Chania and Heraklion and also visited the more touristic places like Malia and Chersonesos (where youngsters have a ball with their beers, we can assure you that).

We saw Crete in all its facets and just kept driving all over the island. And yes, it is stunning. And yes, our Harley Davidsons were the talk of the town everywhere we went. We never saw a similar machine when we drove across the island and everywhere we went, people were waving to us. I really have to mention that: the Greek hospitality is amazing and if you ever have the time, you should take a trip to Greece or one of its beautiful islands.

Looking For Good Santorini Hotels

Santorini is one of the largest Greek islands in a cluster that take the same name, and is commonly accepted as one of the most picturesque places to visit from all of the Greek islands and is a popular holiday destination thousands of Europeans, welcoming over 600,000 visitors each year.

Hotels on Santorini are plentiful, mainly because the island relies on tourism as its main form of income. As a result, most of (if not all of) the island has many hotels, villas, apartments and even traditional cave houses that are situated on the dramatic cliffs that form most of the Santorini coastal line.

Making sure you find a good hotel on Santorini is a quite easy thing to do, since most places of accommodation tend to offer stunning views of the island and the coast. A top-floor room in a hotel is quite likely to offer memorable views of at least some part of the island, and with it, views of the south Aegean Sea. The first thing you should do is perform a web search for the popular hotels on Santorini, and for hotel review sites that provide comments and feedback from people who’ve stayed on the island. This will provide an idea of what hotels to avoid before you book.

You should always ask for a discount from any tour operator who provides you with rates for hotel bookings. Similarly with hotel booking sites, which also operate on a “kick-back” or admin fee basis, try and contact the hotel directly and see if you can secure the room or hotel you want at a reduced rate. Or you could use a price comparison website to search them for you!

There are also a number of archaeological sites to visit on Santorini and, with its steep coast lines, most, if not all of the island’s main population centres will provide stunning views even from cafes and bars.

How To Find The Best Hotels In Athens

When you’re looking around for a hotel in Athens, you should start by asking yourself what it is that you actually want from the place you’ll be choosing. Although you might think this is obvious, in my experience it’s easy to forget this simple rule that you should keep in your mind.

So how do we go about answering this question? What we need to do is develop a list of features that can be found in the Athens hotels that you discover in your online search. Once we have this list, we’ll be much better able to select a hotel that best matches what we’re ideally looking for.

Starting at the beginning, you’ll obviously have a reason to be staying in a hotel in the first place. There are plenty of possible reasons here – visiting people you know, attending a function etc. – but the two we find the most frequent are for a break or holiday, or for work purposes.

Once we have in mind why it is we’re going, we then need to decide where in Athens will be the best place for us to be based. This will take into account factors such as whether you want to be near the town centre, near to any sightseeing opportunities, or near to the place you’ll be working.

Now you know this, you’ll want to decide on the kind of facilities that the hotel should have. It’s almost certain that every modern hotel will come with an en suite bathroom, though you can potentially save some cash if this isn’t necessary for you. And you should think whether you want the place to have a bar or somewhere you can get dinner.

Several years ago, it would have been quite unusual for hotels to have facilities such as a gym or a swimming pool. But nowadays, you can find quite a few that offer these and more. And if you want to be using the internet while you’re away, you might want to check if your hotel has a wifi connection.

We said you could potentially save money with a hotel with fewer facilities, and obviously this will be a big factor in your choice. There’s no point going after a luxurious hotel if you can’t afford to pay the necessary amount of cash to stay there. In Athens, there are many hotels that are available that will suit any pocket, so you should certainly find what you’re after.

So now you know roughly the area you want to be in, and the facilities you’ll want from your hotel and the surrounding area, it’s time to look at all the hotels that Athens has to offer you, and make your decision according to the criteria you’ve just established for the ideal place.

One final factor, of course, is the dates you’ll want to stay there. It’s not always the case that each hotel is available for your chosen time frame – or perhaps not for all the time you want to be there – so it’s essential you check based on the actual dates of your stay so you’re not disappointed when you come to book.

Holidays In The Greek Islands

Do you remember studying the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World as a schoolchild and being awestruck at their magnificence? One such Wonder was the Colossus of Rhodes, a statue standing over 100 feet tall and built in the third century BC to glorify the mythical sun god Helios. Well, if you take your holidays in the Greek Islands, and include in your visit a trip to the island of Rhodes, you’ll be able to journey back into time.

You can be transported back in time and become part of all the action. Your imagination will run wild as you start to envision the builders of this amazing statue working tirelessly. Rhodes is a must-see spot but there are many others.

If ancient history doesn’t hold a firm grip on you, visiting the Cyclades island group may be for you. The island of Sifnos, perhaps the least commercialized of all Greek Islands, offers beautiful vistas on the Aegean, scores of churches, acres of olive trees, and the beautiful beach at Faros.

Mykenos, another Cycladic island, is the most visited Greek Island. Here tourists can enthusiastically bombard their senses. This island is rich in relentless nightlife, diverse restaurants, teeming but excellent beaches, and unbeatable people-watching.

If you visit the Island of Naxos, the first thing you will see is the Portara. The Portara is a beautiful structure of marble that was built in 6 B. C. It was built as an entryway to the unfinished temple to Apollo and is quite a sight. After you take in this breathtaking structure, you have your pick of beaches. They are some of world’s most beautiful. An alternative to sunbathing is taking a tour of all the lovely valleys.

No matter which island or islands of Greece you choose, your trip will remain in your memory forever. Your visit will be too short regardless of how long you stay. The sirens’ calls will be drawing you back forever.
