Hoquiam Farmers Market – Supplying a great town

Agriculture and commerce has always been part of Hoquiam and the Grays Harbor area farmers all around Washington state have endeavored to bring their fresh produce from their beautiful productive farms to the communities of the Grays Harbor area to supply the mixed population of official residents and temporary ones who in the past worked for the logging firms, mills and shingle factories in the area.

“Hungry for wood” that is the translation of the town and rivers’ name Hoquiam which is a Native American term. The abundance of the old growth forest can only satiate men’s hunger for lumber but of course he cannot eat wood, in earlier times men took from the woods, rivers and coast to supplement their meager supplies, elk, deer, salmon and berries and the occasional trade with the indigenous tribes made it possible for some few enterprising souls to continue on with their quest for precious lumber.

The men who ventured forth into the great forest of the Grays Harbor found their fortunes or meager livelihood from the good quality timber that was felled, hauled and processed and this took much time. The lumber men and those in the mill had little or no time at all to find their own food and other supplies, unlike those that came before them.

As time went by the number of logging and milling operations increased and with this came more men sometimes with their families to feed and to tend to. The locals and those around the Grays Harbor area tended to those needs as they worked hard as well as those in the lumber industry to provide those basic needs that those who came to work in Hoquiam and the other towns around Grays Harbor had.

Aside from meat and cereals and grain men needed fish and in the good old days the rivers and coast were a very good source of seafood and fresh they were. The earlier settlers came about catching their own when time allowed them or special fishing and foraging parties were organized to provide the logging camps their protein requirements.

Now fish can still be had, especially if they are in season you will surely find a great whole fresh fish or a sumptuous fillet ready to be poached or fried in any of the fish stalls in the Grays Harbor Market and if you are already hungry and cannot wait to cook your own salmon or trout then surely there will be a small stall selling well cooked and delicious fish dishes to tickle your taste buds.

Since the lumber business started in Hoquiam and the Grays Harbor, the increased number of people seasonally and the increasing number of residents gave to an ever increasing amount of needs for food and other necessities that such men require. It was good business for both sides since the lumber men were able to concentrate on what they needed to do and the farmers and other suppliers had good business.

You can experience the same things that thousands of people from the not so distant past have experienced in Grays Harbor and in Hoquiam city, a sense of welcome like no other. If you hunger or taste for good food, wine and beer, or you enjoy music and the arts or you are simply looking for a good bargain or a business opportunity then the Grays Harbor Farmers Market and Craft Fair is the place for you, The market operates twelve months a year so this is something long term and needs commitment, just how people in the Grays Harbor area and the residents of Hoquiam like doing their business.

The Greatest Locations To Dine In New York

So you’re coming to New York City for the first time. You’ve heard all the great things about the food, but you have no idea where to go! Here is a quick rundown to some of the best restaurants, and neighborhoods, to dine in on your trip to New York.

When it comes to the East Village, there is never a shortage of options. I currently live in the East Village and sometimes the number of dining options overwhelms me. Some of the best restaurants in the area include, but are not limited to Graffiti, Hearth and Momofuku Ko. Regardless of what you’re in the mood for, this is certainly an area to get your fix.

If you are looking for something outside the box, Graffiti on East 10th Street is Indian inspired small plates that seriously made me contemplate vegetarianism for 45 minutes. Ippudo serves a world-class bowl of ramen as well. On a cold rainy day, it does not get better than Ippudo.

The West Village is another hotspot for restaurants. I personally love the Fatty Crab, which offers an Americanized take on Malaysian BBQ. The portions are large, spicy, and most importantly, cheap. Ushiwakamaru is a Japanese-style sushi bar where the fish is so fresh, you’ll feel like you’re in Kyoto if you close your eyes.

Tribeca is never at a loss for fine dining. Bouley and Nobu are two of the best restaurants in New York and appropriately, two of the toughest reservations to get.

The consensus when it comes to fine dining has to be Columbus Circle. This small area houses some of the best restaurants in the world. The list goes on and on, but some of the best ones include Per Se, Masa, A Voce, Marea and Jean Georges. That’s a ton of Michelin Stars in such a small area!

NoLita quietly has a nice selection of restaurants to pick from as well. Caf Habana is a tourist trap, but if you can go during off hours, the grilled corn is worth it. My new go-to sandwich spot, Torrissi Italian Specialties is another must-try. They make their buffalo mozzarella in-house daily, and it shows. Some of the best I’ve ever had.

These are just a few of the great eating areas, but it wouldn’t be right to make a food list about New York and not include Murray Hill, the Upper East Side and the Financial District. Just kidding! Stick to the areas mentioned above and you’ll leave New York a happy (and full) camper.

What You’ll Experience In Canadian Restaurants Or Hotels

While many restaurants or hotels that are foreign to those in the USA have a lot of similar qualities, they all have unique qualities. In Canada, there are a number of these qualities, even at the fast-food level. Some of the things an American might experience in a restaurant in Canada can be quite surprising, and can cause some awkward moments if one doesn’t know them ahead of time.

Before you can even enter the country, you have to convert your money to the Canadian dollar. Since the US dollar is worth more, the conversion tends to yield more money. However, because Canada’s currency is weaker, their prices are higher to compensate for having more of their money. To a foreigner, the prices can seem steep, when in fact they’re relatively the same, but the conversion is different.

When someone goes out to eat at a decent restaurant, it’s customary to leave a tip. In Canada (as with many countries), it’s not only a common courtesy, but a necessity. Part of you bill will include the tip, and to many that’s a convenience, but to others it can be disconcerting. Some people may use a different rate for tipping, or may not want to tip due to bad service, but whatever the case, it must be done. More often than not, it just comes off as more convenient in the end.

Part of the experience of going to a foreign restaurant is eating foreign food that you won’t get in your native country. Canada has it’s own share of unique foods, but it also (conveniently enough) shares some of the same foods you’ll see in both France and the UK because of the history they have with those countries. Therefore, when going to a Canadian restaurant, you can get several cultures at once.

For those that are looking for something a little more American, they’d be surprised to see how different fast-food is as well. Canadian fast-food is different in many ways, like selling beer where that’s rare in America. Some of these differences may be better, and some may be worse, but above all they tend to be enlightening, as they generally come off as a surprise.

Another of those differences is how they prepare or list some of the same foods. When you go to a restaurant that you’d see in a America, they’re likely to have some of the same items on the menu, but in a different way. In Canada, for example, they use the metric system, so a steak won’t go by the American size scale of ounces, making it hard for a foreigner to know what they’re ordering.

Anywhere you go, there are certain foods that are more popular, or may not even be eaten in that country. These foods define what kind of restaurant is most common, or what you’ll commonly see on a menu. In Canada, there are a few foods like this, such as cheese and beer, that are popular enough among Canadians that make their way onto menus that you might not see in other countries.

No matter what restaurants and hotels you go to in Canada, the experience is still unique in its own way. In many ways, it can be hard to understand or get used to, but that’s because food means something different to Canadians than it does to Americans. They treat food as more of an art, where in America they treat is as a time consuming necessity. It’s just one of the many ways that make the foreign restaurant experience a reason to travel.

Doolin Hotels, Restaurants And Pub Menus – Four Recommend Places For Seafood Lovers

It is probably true to say that Irish cuisine is perceived globally as being bland. Thankfully, the wave of immigrants that helped buoy up the Celtic Tiger economy have also brought with them an appreciation of European, Asian and World cuisine that has prompted a restaurant boom.

Even the smaller towns and villages around Ireland are benefiting from this rise in restaurant numbers as each village sees the value this provides to local tourism.

One town of particular note, in gastronomic terms, is Doolin in the west of Ireland. For many years, visitors were only in Doolin for the traditional music sessions or to get the ferry over to the Aran Islands. But nowadays, Doolin hotels, pubs and restaurant are raising the standard of dining for the entire region.

In the village sits Cullinan’s restaurant. Their menu focuses on using the seafood & shellfish caught and delivered daily from the local harbor. The overall feel of the menu is one of classic Mediterranean spices and flavor combinations that complement the fish and legumes used.

A fine dining experience is available at Ballinalacken Castle Country House Hotel and Restaurant. Indeed there is a wonderful blend of the plush dining room dcor, the exquisite food, the panoramic views of Galway Bay and all set with the backdrop the 15th century castle which forms the backdrop to the hotel and restaurant.

Family groups in search of a no-fuss option will find the Aran View House Hotel restaurant a pleasing option. Diners can choose from the formal a la carte menu in the main dining room, the standard menu or the bar menu in the hotel bar. The style of good suits the country house dcor and is more traditionally Irish with stews, roasts and seafood options throughout.

Any visitor to Doolin should not however miss out on hearing some of the best traditional music sessions that this town is famous for. The best places to experience this is in the two main bars on the main street, McGann’s and O’Connor’s pubs. Both also provide regular hearty pub fare with the local seafood chowder being a firm favorite along with the obligator Irish stew.

Given that Doolin is a small Irish village in a relatively remote region, it is great to see the town has raised its game and now provides enough dining-out options to cater for families, couples and singletons seeking good quality locally sourced food. While it may never take Kinsale’s crown as the culinary capital, it will certainly be considered in the top 3.

Discover Doolin Ireland for yourself. For more information visit the Doolin Hotels Guide website.

Everyone knows that New York is known for its great pizza. One great place to check out is Luzzo’s in the East Village. This place serves up some of the best Neapolitan pizza I’ve ever tried, and I’m by no means the only person to make that claim. These pies are hot, fresh, and the perfect size.

You may also want to try John’s Pizza on Bleecker Street in the West Village if you find yourself on the West side of town. This landmark restaurant is known as one of the best pizzerias in all of Manhattan, and commonly has a line that goes out the door.

Another must try in the city is its bagels. If you find yourself uptown, you should definitely try to get to an H&H Bagels location.

And when you are downtown, be sure to go to one of the Murray’s Bagels stores on the West side. They taste so good when they are nice and hot, and there are several spreads for your to choose from that will go nicely on them.

Craving a burger? NYC is home to some of the best in the world, and many believe that the finest are offered at Shake Shack. There are two main locations that you may be able to get to pretty easily.

One is in Madison Square Park. If you find yourself here when it’s cold out, this may not be ideal, as it’s literally located inside the park and has no indoor seating.

The other location is definitely more conducive to cold weather, as an indoor Shake Shack restaurant can be found on the Upper West Side. Whichever you choose, you’ll have some great burgers, fries, and shakes to enjoy.

The Most Interesting NY Neighborhoods

Listing great things about Manhattan is the easiest thing in the world, there are so many of them. This vibrant, cosmopolitan city is loved by both those who live there and those who visit. A trip to New York is on everyone’s wish list.

I’ve done a great deal of exploring since I became a resident of Manhattan and the diverse people and places just blows me away. The only problem with New York is the sheer size of it; you never feel fully part of it, however hard you try.

Let’s leave the negatives behind and focus on the best that Manhattan has to offer. These are just a few of my personal recommendation for you to check out next time you come to take a bite out if the big apple.

I’ve tried out many places to eat and drink since I’ve been living here, and my favorites are in the eclectic East Village.

If you want to shop for clothes, grab a drink, or choose from a great variety of food styles, the East Village is the place for you. Geared towards the younger age group of twenties and thirties, this square mile is busy, vibrant and very cosmopolitan. The Lower East side borders it at the bottom and it’s very easy to cross from one to other without realising it.

Patrons with more maturity tend to congregate in the coffee bars that are set amongst the trees on the sidewalks of the West Village. Chic clothes boutiques attract a classy clientele, yet the area retains the vibrancy that New York is famous for.

If Bohemia isn’t your style and you want to spend some time at one with nature, then head for the Upper West Side. This area is home to the world famous Central Park, a beautiful place to relax for a few hours and watch the world go by.

I hope I’ve got across you what a great place Manhattan is, and that no trip to New York is complete without visiting this wonderful borough. Oh there’s more, believe me, but that’s enough for today!
