The University of California Merced campus opened recently in Merced. UCM, at Merced, in the central valley, is the 10th campus of the university. It is the first research university in the US to open in the new century.

In 1988 the ruling body of the University of California made the decision that the next campus to be built would be in the San Joaquim valley. This would relieve enrolment pressure on other campuses, and it was noticed that the San Joaquin was the largest and most heavily populated section of California not to have a campus. The Merced site, about midway between Fresno and Modesto was chosen for the new campus.

The new campus opened for the first time in 2005, and the first full class of students graduated in 2009. Michelle Obama, First Lady of the US, was a guest of honor at the ceremony, and she gave the commencement address.

The three schools at UCM are in engineering, in natural sciences, and in social sciences, humanities and arts. A total of 19 major subjects, and 18 minors are on offer to undergraduate students.

The first research institute to open at UCM is the Sierra Nevada Research Institute (SNRI). Three other institutes are planned. The emphasis at UCM is on cutting edge research, grounded in science, engineering, maths and social sciences.

Research can benefit from the location, for example research is done into issues concerning the environmental systems in the Californian Central Valley, and the Sierra Nevada mountains, and cultural and language research benefits from the very diverse ethnic mix in the area.

When Rev. Edward Sorin set up the University of Notre Dame in Indiana, he was proposing a university that would provide a service to communities of USA.
