The Cat’s Corner: Los Gatos

The southern portion of of the world-famous San Francisco Bay, known as the South Bay, is home to a handful of well-known, if not significant cities and towns. The best known of the bunch are San Jose and Mountain View — thanks to Adobe and Google respectively. Of course, Dione Warwick and Burt Bacharach’s eponymous song did make it easier to find one’s way to San Jose, though the emergence of Silicon Valley turned it into an international destination.

Besides these well-known cities, there’s a small town south of San Jose that is starting to generate it’s own buzz, if not on an international level, then certainly on the regional level. Welcome to Los Gatos, California. What once started as a flour mill in the 1850′s has become one of the most fashionable suburbs in the South Bay.

Given the new-found prestige of Netflix, the town is enjoying a new kind of renown. You see, the red-enveloped rental giant just so happens to be headquartered in this quaint town. This is a touch ironic in the sense that a fair share of Hollywood stars have settled here, like Olivia de Havilland and Aaron Eckhart — not to mention Steve Wozniak, co-founded on Apple, and more than a few current and former San Jose Sharks.

This isn’t surprising given the town’s reputation as a high-end, somewhat posh suburb. It is a town whose median household income is $116,000, a far cry more than the state average. Mind you, most of salaries are drawn from the tech sector, which thrives across the area. It seems that even though the majority of the state is in deep economic peril, this little town is rebuffing the down-turn with aplomb.

Weekend getaways, honeymoons, and special events are all best set against the lush hills of the South Bay. If you are indeed planning a weekend getaway or want to stay a week in one of the most unique areas in California, you would be hard-pressed to top Los Gatos. It offers all the amenities of a big city, with none of the drawbacks. You’re only minutes away from San Jose and a brief BART ride to Berkeley, Oakland, or San Francisco. The Bay Area is at your feet!

For those in search of something a bit out-of-the-ordinary, you would be hard-pressed to find a more quaint place in the South Bay than Los Gatos, California!
