Las Vegas is one of the world’s hottest entertainment destinations, as the more than 38 million people who visit this glittering city each year can readily attest. If you’re one of them, you are no doubt interested in getting the cheapest rates possible on a hotel room during your stay. But beware, for just because you see an advertisement for a hotel that boasts the best rooms at the fairest price doesn’t necessarily mean that this is what you’re going to get.

Suppose you’re shopping around for a room in Las Vegas and you see an ad for one that goes for about $19.95 a night. Can you trust it? Not completely, for there are hidden costs about which you may not know. For one thing, this price doesn’t factor in any taxes that may be charged, and Nevada charges a 7.75 percent sales tax on everything you buy. TO make matters worse, there is a 9 percent tax on hotel rooms in Las Vegas alone. And if you happen to choose accommodations conveniently located near the so-called Fremont Street Experience, you’re going to have to pay an additional 2 percent onto your room tax.

But there are still things you can do to get the best possible deal on a room in Las Vegas. First of all, remember that hotel and motel rooms are generally more expensive on Friday and Saturday than they would be if you booked a room between Monday and Thursday. Also, remember to take holidays into account because this is when Las Vegas is at its most crowded. If you plan to be in Las Vegas on, say, New Year’s Eve or some other major holiday, be sure you book a room well in advance or you’ll be left stranded. Moreover, you should know that hotel and motel rooms are invariably more expensive on holidays, which is why budget conscious consumers tend not to go to Las Vegas during these times.

Of course, the money you spend on hotel accommodations is just one of the factors to be taken into account as you plan your Vegas trip. You may or may not have thought of it, but you’re probably going to need transportation in and around the city, and there are many different options for you to choose from. For instance, you can always take a taxi from the airport once you land, but airport shuttles are far and away the cheapest route. Also, shuttle buses run 24 hours a day, seven days a week from McCarran Airport to the Strip and downtown Las Vegas, and the less than $10 per person price tag is surely more than reasonable.

Finally, there are a few more transportation options and concerns that should be taken into account when you go to Vegas. For example, we mentioned earlier that you can choose to take taxis, especially from the airport. You should know, however, that the base cost of a taxi is $3.20, with an additional $2.20 thrown in for each mile you’re driven. Renting a car is always an option, of course, and this usually costs about $25 to $30 a day, although the cost goes up on weekends and at times when the supply might not meet demand, such as when there are large conventions or some other special events going on in the city. And while you can generally find free parking throughout the city, opting for valet parking means that you will be expected to tip at least $2.00 to have your car parked and/or retrieved.
