How not to Book a Vacation

You’ve read it all about how “TO” book that dream vacation. But is that enough for a fail-safe getaway? Can you rest assured that you’re a SUREFIRE because you know what to do?

Joanne was excited about this long awaited vacation. It had been two years since she sauntered the streets of Puerto Rico. Tanning, beach BBQs, cocktail parties, dancing the nights away were all things of the past.

Besides the occasional weekend get-together with friends, there was hardly anything she did that she could call FUN. Perhaps, this was the situation for most of us. For some, planning a vacation feels like building castles in the sky! We hardly save enough when we live on a super tight budget.

After much deliberation, she finally decided to give it a whirl, take that leap of faith and plan her dream vacation. She thought “It’s now or never”, girl. Overworked, underpaid, exhausted and clearly in need of a break, mistakes were bound to be made in planning, and boy were they ever.

She called up her travel agent and asked them to book a package vacation to Zurich. Ah, the breathtaking the Swiss Alps! Unfortunately, what you don’t know is that Joanne’s IDEAL ski getaway was actually a tourist trap. She ended up paying almost double the actual cost without any upgrades or special discounts.

During the flight, she could have easily gained an upgrade, given the miles she had accrued in Star Alliance’s Miles and More frequent fliers program. But her agent booked an airline, which is not a Star Alliance partner. What a lost opportunity!

Joanne’s first mistake was that she planned and booked in haste. When, in fact, budget travel requires planning well in advance, scouring the internet for the cheapest plane ticket, searching for discount accommodations, cheap rent-a-cars, etc. I mean, really, who can afford to take the first travel package that comes their way?

Any discerning traveler today would prefer a travel website over an agent it’s one of the advantages of the World Wide Web! Keep surfing for the best deals. Compare each website and calculate all the pros and cons. Never book in a hurry.

When you have time, you can always book in advance and grab the lowest airfare. So why wait until the last few days and pay top dollar? Okay, you want to snatch a last minute deal. Here’s what you need NOT do in this case. Don’t book during peak travel times; i.e. Fridays, Sunday evenings, Monday mornings, the day before and after a holiday, or mid-day flights. Joanne’s agent had her flying out on a Friday evening flight!

Also, don’t book another air flight when you have flier miles accrued with your regular airline or the airline’s partners. This means, if you’re a frequent flyer of Star Alliance partner airlines, ideally, you shouldn’t change over to Oneworld or Sky Team. Changing to a different alliance will eliminate your eligibility for the upgrades and benefits, which you could earn from your frequent fliers program. Thus, while Joanne could have opted for a Swiss Airlines flight to Zurich, her agent booked British Airways. Swiss Airlines is a member of Star Alliance, which she uses quite frequently for all her domestic trips. Hence, this time, she couldn’t use her flier miles.

So, you see, planning can earn you incredible benefits and even more savings. So, learn from Joanne’s mistake! Plan your vacation wisely and don’t just take the first deal that comes your way. Scour the internet for the best deals out there. Look at all-inclusive vacation packages versus a la carte vacations.

Cruise Freebies – Keep Your Eyes Open For Bargains

If you have been saving hard all year for your dream cruise holiday, it makes sense to make your budget stretch as far as it possibly can once you’re onboard. After the initial cost of the cruise, taking spending money along is a must but if you are canny you can make it last as long as possible.

However, if you know where to look, there will be many opportunities to not only save money, but also obtain a great number of services free of charge. If you familiarise yourself with the ship as soon as you board, you can begin your freebie adventure.

To start with, don’t be tempted by the many cafes aboard the ship that will charge you for teas, coffees and soft drinks – even water!. Stick to the main dining areas where you know these will be free.

There will be lots of parties onboard thrown by the staff to give the passengers a chance to mingle. You can often pick up free alcoholic drinks like wine at these so it is well worth keeping your eyes open for them. Also, cash your traveller’s cheques on board rather than offshore where you will face a pretty steep service charge.

Look for special offers onboard at the various services offered to passengers. For instance, if you are willing to act as a model then you might bag yourself a free haircut or facial.

For most cruise and stay holidays, the purser’s desk will be a treasure trove of giveaways. Some minor-emergency objects that are known to be given away regularly, include decks of cards, aspirins and sewing kits.

So, if you keep your wits about you there are lots of freebies and bargains to be had on even the most expensive cruise. Giveaways not only serve as reminders of that holiday of a lifetime, but the truly thrifty can also recycle many of them as gifts for friends back home!

Why Cruise Holidays Are Great For Your Wallet

There are so many advantages to choosing a cruise holiday. One of the main reasons of course is that you are able to travel around the world in complete comfort – there’s no flying (unless you intend to cruise from a port outside of your own country), no driving and everything is done for you.

Cruise ships are the height of luxury and offer all the same amenities – if not more – as some of the world’s most exclusive resorts.

Although the initial cost of a cruise may seem high, don’t forget that that will include accommodation, flights and other travel, food, soft drinks and many of the onboard activities like bingo, the cinema and other entertainment.

Apart from spending money and alcoholic drinks, most cruise liners have no hidden charges to catch you out. You can be sure that you will already have covered 90% of the cost of your holiday in the price of the cruise itself.

For the food onboard that is included in the cost of your ticket, the choice is truly spectacular. Most liners will have at least 5 or 6 restaurants which will serve a wide choice of cuisines and offer different dining styles from formal to self service. Don’t forget, the buffets are usually open for 24 hours a day so you can eat when you please.

Cruises are also a good choice when it comes to activities. If you do not want to relax by the pool the whole time – and you can do that if you wish – you can take part in activities which range from sports to educational talks.

However, you may want to relax in the day and save all your energy for the evening entertainment which included something for everything including cabaret, musicals, dancing classes, films and karaoke.

There are many types of cruises for every type of traveler such as: Family Cruises, Singles Cruises, Caribbean Cruises, Alaskan Cruises, Wedding Cruises, Themed Cruises, Mediterranean Cruises, and much more. Before you book your next cruise, you should be aware of important cruise travel considerations so that you ensure your cruise is fun and memorable. Below is a helpful guide to cruise ship travel:

1. The best time to take a cruise depends on the cruise travel destinations. For instance, the summer months are the best time to take an Alaskan Cruise and European Cruise. The winter months are more appropriate for the Caribbean. If you want a great deal, try traveling during the off season which is spring and fall. For instance, November in the Caribbean is the off-season and a great time to get a cheap deal. You can consult with your local travel agent about any last minute sell-offs being offered during the off-season.

2. If you are looking to get a great deal on a cruise, book a vacation during the ’shoulder season.’ This is the period right between the destination’s low and high seasons. For instance, the cheapest time to go on an Alaskan cruise is May. As well, November/December is a great time to for a Caribbean Cruise. October and April is a good time for a Mediterranean cruise. You can get some great bargains when booking for the ’shoulder season.’

3. The internet is a great resource for finding and booking a cheap cruise. It is also a handy comparison shopping tool that will help ensure that you are getting the best deal. You can take advantage of last minute deals, special promotions, and special off-season prices. As well, you can often get a special discounted cruise vacation package.

4. Because there are only a few cruise ports, you may have to get a cheap flight to the cruise port. You can often get a combo “fly-cruise” package. It is important to compare prices to see if you can get a better deal by purchasing the ticket independently. The “fly-cruise” price will usually include transfers between the ship and the airport, which can increase the price. There are a number of cheap airline websites where you can find a great deal. You may want to book your flights online (or offline) a day before departure in case there are flight delays.

It can be difficult planning a vacation cruise, especially if it is your first time. It is important to know where you want to go and the type of cruise you want to take before you book. Fortunately, there are many ways to book your dream cruise while getting a great price. Advice For The Perfect Babymoon Vacation

Although having baby is an exciting and emotional time in a couple’s life, it also means that there will be some major life changes. For instance, you and your partner will no longer be living as a couple that has the freedom to get up and go at a moments notice. Basically, you will be responsible for a precious new life. Before baby makes three, couples will often take one last vacation to relax and enjoy the last moments alone. When you are planning the perfect babymoon vacation, there are a number of things you can do to make your time together relaxing, enjoyable and memorable.

1. There is a certain point in the pregnancy when a woman should not travel due to the risk of premature labor. It is recommended that a pregnant woman not fly before 12 weeks. The best time for an expectant mother to travel is during the second trimester, weeks 14 to 27. During this period, morning sickness should have subsided. While on the plane, make sure you stretch your legs every hour to prevent blood clots. As well, make sure you get a comfortable seat with plenty of leg room.

2. When planning where to travel when pregnant, it is important to choose a flight destination where you will be comfortable. Traveling to a destination that is known for extreme heat may not be a good choice as the heat can cause dehydration and nausea. The Caribbean and Florida are popular winter destinations. Canada is a great place to travel as the climate is very temperate. You will also want to travel to places that have quality healthy food with comfortable hotels. As well, you should familiarize yourself with the location of the local hospitals and physician clinics.

3. Vacationing while pregnant means you have to choose the appropriate clothing. Clothing should be loose fitting and the fabric soft on the skin. Elastic waistlines are a good choice. You should also make sure your clothing is appropriate for the climate. You do not want to be too cold or so hot that you are constantly perspiring.

4. While at your destination, you have to make sure you are eating and drinking healthy. You should consider drinking only bottled water. As well, eat at fine restaurants that have an excellent rating. Eat foods that are healthy for you and the baby. You can even bring your own healthy snacks.

5. Make sure you have had a doctor’s health check up before you leave. If you are staying at a sunny destination, wear lots of sunscreen. Bring your vitamins, medicine, and any medical documentation. As well, make sure you get plenty of rest before and during the vacation.

Having a baby means life as a couple will soon be changing to baby makes three. The babymoon vacation is a great time to enjoy the last moments of peace and quiet. When you make the proper travel preparations take your pregnancy into consideration and you will have a fun, healthy, diaper-free unforgettable vacation.

Which travel site provides the best vacation/flight/hotel deals?

I am taking my family on a trip in Aug and we are planning on stopping in NYC for one night. Any reccomendations on affordable hotels I should check out, or a website that has good deals?

I have checked every site on the web (or at least most of the big ones anyway) and the two best I have found are:
http://www.hotwire.com/index.jsp?sid=S20&bid=B256273&kid=K0000001&mid=M01
http://travel.priceline.com/default.asp?rdr=1&session_key=420011AC5C0011AC20080330164841651bc0943022
With Priceline you have to bid but you can get some incredible prices. I got a 4 star in NYC last November for $125/night (The normal price was $450/night). Check them out and you’ll see what I mean.

Best website/source for vacation deals when you don’t care where or when you go?

Looking to go on a vacation, but want to find a great deal. I don’t have a preference on travel days or a destination (somewhere warm or with plenty to do…beaches, casinos, historic, nature, landmarks, tropical etc…) Are there sites I could try other than the obvious Travelocity, Orbitz, Hotwire, Hotels.com? Thank you for your help.

If you don’t mind traveling last minute, this website can have good deals on airfare and hotels: http://us.lastminute.com/ It varies weekend to weekend.

You should also sign up for the weekly Top 20 email from http://www.travelzoo.com/. They scour the Internet for the best travel deals and publish them weekly. I’ve seen some really great deals.

Slightly more ordinary, but I’ve also bought a vacation package from http://www.go-today.com/. They sell vacations by location or by theme, including multi-country.

Good luck!
