Probably Hungary is not on the list of places that you really want to visit. With this article I will try to change your mind and persuade you to give the country a chance. Discover a new culture while you are on holiday this year. Visit Budapest, the capital city, enjoy all the great things that this city has to offer.

If you have never been to Hungary before I would advise you to visit the capital, Budapest first. Since I am a native Hungarian I know the city very well and now I will attempt to recommend you places to visit, things to do. But before I start on that let me mention the language.

Don’t worry; it’s not as bad as it sounds. Most young people speak 2-3 foreign languages in Hungary so you will be fine. Tourist information is always available in English, so while travelling, in museums or in a restaurant, just to mention a few, you will be able to understand what is going on. However I still recommend you taking a mini dictionary and a few crucial sentences translated to Hungarian in case of an emergency.

The Parliament Building, Hero’s Square, The Castle, Gellert Hill, The Basilica, and Matthias Church are among the places that you must visit while you are in Budapest. After checking out the famous sights make sure you take a walk along the Danube or even jump on a boat and see the shoreline from the river. If you are in the city for several days make sure you indulge yourself for a few hours in one of the thermal baths, in Szechenyi, Rudas or Gellert bath.

If you love museums and interested in history, visit the Hungarian National Museum and the House of Terror. If you like art check out the Museum of Fine Arts at Hero’s Square or the Ludwig Museum, which is the museum of contemporary art. In the evening choose an open-air bar or club, I would suggest Szimpla kert or Corvin Teto, which will take you back a few decades in time.
