You’re planning your long-awaited vacation to a faraway place. Likely you have made lists of what to take, what to see, and so forth. But, have you researched how to behave? Cultural sensitivity is an important part of every traveler’s toolkit. If you aren’t sensitive to local norms, you may offend the people around you.
It is hard to see why any traveler would risk having problems on vacation when it is so easy to avoid many of the major pitfalls. Taking the time to research a country and its culture before you arrive is most helpful. Make sure that everyone in your party knows how to behave properly.
Every culture has its own requirements, but here are some general pitfalls to avoid:
Not knowing how to eat: Picture going to a highly recommended restaurant to sample the local fare. You’ve been looking forward to this visit for quite some time. When your food arrives, however, you realize with some horror – you have no idea how to eat it. What now?
Ideally you will have done some research before your arrival, to avoid this problem. If it does happen, you may be in luck if the restaurant staff notice your confusion and tell you how to eat the meal. Another possible technique for sidestepping awkwardness here is to discretely look around at other diners. The local patrons will know how to eat the foods served at the establishment. Follow their lead and you will likely be fine.
Getting drunk: In some cultures, residents are proud of the fact that they are able to consume alcohol without getting drunk. If you get drunk in such a culture, you’ll mark yourself as foolish. In other cultures, you risk violating religious or moral rules against drunkenness and can seriously offend people.
If you drink so much you become intoxicated, those around you may be offended. Drunkenness is disrespectful. Do not teach people from other cultures to associate disrespectful behavior with your home country.
Not dressing respectfully: Some countries have stringent codes of modesty in dress, especially for women. In these countries, women may have to be very fully covered. Whether or not you personally agree with these norms, it is important to conform to them at least partially.
You also don’t want to stand out as a tourist. If your clothing announce “tourist here!,” you may be more likely to have criminals target you for theft or scamming.
